Turkey | Istanbul | Suleimaniye Mosque
During 2009 I wandered by the Suleimaniye Mosque in Istanbul. As you no doubt know the Suleimaniye Mosque was built by Sulieman The Magnificent (r. 1520-66), arguably the greatest of the Ottoman Sultans.
Take a Take a Walking Tour of the MosqueThe Mosque was designed by Sinan (Ottoman Turkish: قوجو معمار سنان آغا), the greatest architect of Ottoman Turkey.
I have added this book to my Scriptorium and can recommend it most highly. By all means travel to Turkey yourself to see Sinan’s works, but if for some reason you cannot the breath-takingly luscious photos in this book are enough to make most people swoon.

Hello from Turkiye. This is such a good blog i found it interesting. wish you had seen Sultan Ahmet and Ayasofya? but i want to correct a mistake. Suleyman, (Full name Kanuni Sultan Suleyman, or Suleyman the Magnificent) is not the greatest sultan of us. greatest sultans are his Father Yavuz Sultan Selim and his grandfather Mehmet the Conqueror (Fatih Sultan Mehmet) Thank you for your post.
I said Suleyman was “arguably” the greatest Ottoman Sultan. Obviously you would argue otherwise. Personally I would go with Mehmet the Conqueror, simply because he conquered Constantinople. But many historians cite Suleyman’s reign as the apogee of the Ottomans, making him the greatest Sultan. Anyhow, his mosque is a masterpiece.
Hi i am also from Turkey, and I would agree with Don. It was during Suleyman's reign the ottoman empire reached its zenith. Not just in military but also in culture and influence.
So who was the worst Sultan? Maybe Ibrahim I? Any other suggestions?
